Why this blog?

For some time now I’ve been thinking about starting this blog, mainly to share my experiences with domestic abuse in the hope that this might make some changes in the life of others. Although it has been sometime now since I’ve been in an abusive relationship it is the events in my life now that have finally prompted to share my experiences and encourage others to do the same.

As I previously mentioned it is what is happening now – today as I write that is my reason for having this blog. I recently witnessed domestic violence on a friend and it is this that made me realize how many people in the world are in exactly the same position as I once was. Now living in Indonesia I am starting to realize the great differences between women here and the western world but also the similarities. For my friend she is living in a Muslim society where divorce is still considered by some unacceptable and the man is the head of the house. For her accessing the information she needed was difficult and not readily available. Yet fundamentally she was in the same situation as women all over the world – in a relationship afraid and alone without support - trapped. For most they know what the decision is that they should make yet for many it takes months or years to finally decide to be free. In the case of my friend she has already suffered physical and verbal abuse and is considered lucky to be alive but even now is forgiving her husband for his wrongdoings – partly afraid but partly given no support to make the decision necessary.

So this is the reason for my blog. As someone who is also a victim of domestic abuse I want to try to give support to others who find themselves in the same position.
